HOW TO BET ON AMERICAN FOOTBALL GAMES
Betting on the NFL is quite simple. At your bookie, you will find different options on which a bet can be placed. As a rule, each bookie offers you the following NFL bets:
- Against the spread
- Moneyline
- Totals
- Same game parlay
- Player props
Are you new to NFL betting and can't imagine what these terms mean or how to use them? Don't worry, we will explain all of these betting terms and more, as well as how to successfully place bets on them.
NFL EXPERT PICKS AGAINST THE SPREAD
The most popular type of NFL bets are picks against the spread (ATS). This is popular because the bookie uses against the spread bets to turn an unbalanced match into an even match. For example, the Kansas City Chiefs host the New York Jets. In this case, one of the best teams plays against one of the worst teams of the 2020/21 season. The moneyline for a win by the Kansas City Chiefs was -500 (1.20). To offer more lucrative betting odds, the bookmaker may set an against the spread. In this example, that would be -14.5 and the betting odds would be -120 (1.83). The bookmaker can balance the game with the ATS. So if you placed an against the spread bet that Kansas City would win, they must cover by at least 15 points. You may hear the phrase "cover the spread" more often in NFL betting.
NFL MONEYLINE
Unlike NFL expert picks against the spread, moneyline picks only require that the team you bet on wins the game. If you bet on a favorite, the betting odds are smaller than in against the spread. If you bet on the underdog, on the other hand, you will find higher betting odds. Some weeks, two evenly matched teams meet in the NFL. In these cases, the moneyline odds on both teams are almost the same.
So, which is better: against the spread or moneyline? Whether you're betting on the favorite or the underdog, ATS is the better choice in both cases. When betting on the favorite, you take more risk but you also have higher odds. If you bet on the underdog, your risk will be reduced with ATS picks and the odds will be slightly smaller.
NFL TOTAL (OVER/UNDER) PREDICTIONS
There are several ways to bet NFL totals:
- Game total
- Team total
- Player prop
All of these NFL totals have the same logic. When you place an NFL total bet, you choose whether you think the bookmaker's given line will be beaten (over) or not beaten (under). For example: Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Seattle Seahawks - Total: 48.5. If both teams score 49 points or more, the over bet will win. If 48 points or less are scored, the under bet will win. There is one exception, which is that some bookmakers offer whole numbers as totals. For example: Pittsburgh Steelers @ Baltimore Ravens - Total: 43.0. There are three ways in which your bet can be settled:
- Under 42 points
- Over 44 points
- Cashback: exactly 43 points
If both teams score exactly 43 points, the bookmaker will refund your bet.
